Text Box: “The Doctor of the future will give no medicine but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, in diet, and in the cause and prevention of disease.”
					  —Thomas Edison
Dr. Ron Rothenberg, founder of California HealthSpan Institute (CHI) has been a pioneer in the field of preventive medicine. Like Thomas Edison, he is, and always has been ahead of his time but his vision is clear. In his continual professional quest to learn and then teach physicians and patients worldwide about current scientifically available data that supports a variety of preventive medical treatment modalities, Dr. Rothenberg continues to pave new roads and support existing interventions in maintaining total body wellness.

Text Box: Dr. Rothenberg believes that total body wellness includes proper diet, proper exercise, natural hormone balancing, stress reduction and many other complimentary treatment regimes. One of the complimentary treatment regimes that Dr. Rothenberg whole-heartedly endorses is acupuncture. For those of you who have not experienced acupuncture treatments and more specifically, acupuncture treatments by CHI’s Jill Suess, L. Ac., licensed acupuncturist, you are missing an incredible healing experience. Keeping the body in balance promotes health and well-being. Acupuncture is a treatment modality that can help the body stay or return to a state of homeostasis or balance.
Acupuncture is more than 3000 years old and is the most utilized form of healing worldwide. In 1823, acupuncture was mentioned in the first edition of the Lancet, a well respected medical journal, as a safe and effective treatment for rheumatism. Acupuncture is a vital component in Chinese Medicine and influences health by stimulating “acupoints” along certain “meridians” or energy “channels” in the body with placement and manipulation of tiny, slender needles. In Chinese Medicine it is considered common knowledge that “energetic imbalance” causes the body to be depleted of the “vital energy” needed to maintain health and well-being. Conversely, “vital energy” is enhanced when “energetic balance” is restored and maintained. If the body has the right energy in the right place, at the right time, immune system function is enhanced and the body is able to heal itself in many cases. “Qi” is the term used in Chinese Medicine to describe subtle human energies.
Acupuncture may change brain chemistry by altering the release of neurohormones and neurotransmitters. Acupuncture affects the central nervous system and causes change in sensation and involuntary body functions, i.e., immune reactions, body temperature and blood pressure. Despite all of the technological and scientific advances in today’s world, it is still unknown why the electromagnetic and chemical events that occur during acupuncture work so effectively in the healing process. Hopefully, as more scientific data becomes available we will be able to learn the answer to that question. Recently, however, Harvard Medical School conducted a study on the effects of acupuncture. Results of the study noted a significant correlation between brain activity and needle manipulation as they are used by acupuncturists.
When acupuncture is performed by a properly trained and licensed professional, it is a safe and effective treatment option. There are no side effects from acupuncture and more times than not, a patient will experience a complete sense of relaxation and overall well-being after their treatments. It is common that treatment for one ailment may also benefit another known or unknown concern. This is the advantage of balancing total body energy.
